Dr. Adu Anane Antwi Appointed Chairman of Reconstituted SEC Board as Ghana Aims to Rebuild Financial Confidence

In a bold step toward restoring public confidence in Ghana’s financial markets, Dr. Adu Anane Antwi has been named Chairman of the newly reconstituted Governing Board of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The announcement was made official during an inauguration ceremony held on May 19 and presided over by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

Dr. Antwi, a respected figure in the financial sector and a former Director-General of the SEC, brings deep institutional knowledge and regulatory experience to the role. His return is widely seen as a strategic move aimed at strengthening oversight and improving transparency in Ghana’s capital markets.

During the inauguration, Dr. Forson emphasized the SEC’s central role in maintaining financial stability, especially in the wake of recent economic hardships that have tested the resilience of the country’s financial systems.

“I am exceedingly pleased to see this board come to life,” Dr. Forson remarked. “Ghana has endured significant economic stress in recent years, and our people are rightly concerned. As the regulator of our capital market, the SEC bears a critical responsibility to restore confidence, integrity, and dignity in the sector.”

He further stressed that the days of unchecked regulatory failure must come to an end.

“The taxpayer cannot continue to be used as a punching bag. The public must no longer bear the burden of regulatory failures,” he said. “This new board must act with focus and integrity to protect investors, promote transparency, and uphold accountability across our financial markets.”

With Dr. Antwi at the helm, expectations are high that the new SEC board will usher in an era of strengthened regulation, renewed investor trust, and resilient market growth.
