NHIS will flourish under Akufo-Addo government – Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor says although there are intractable problems facing the implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme, the social programme will pick up under the right administration.

“The NHIS is still tottering around; we hope it will gather steam under the right leadership because it has come to stay and hopefully Ghanaians will see the difference,” Mr Kufuor told Nana Aba Anamoah on State of Affairs programme aired on GH One TV Friday.

The former president said it was not surprising there have been some pitfalls in the implementation of the programme under the Mahama-led administration because the NDC government didn’t have a lucid picture of how they’ll make it work when they took over government.

“They didn’t share in the vision so there has been a slump in the implementation of the programme,” he noted.

The programme, which has been widely criticised as hitting a snag under the current administration was introduced by the Kufuor administration.

The NHIS policy which used to deliver crucial healthcare package to the masses, is now suffering some operational challenges on the grounds which has plunged the scheme into some difficulty in various health facilities.

But Mr. Kufuor said an NPP government will create the opportunity to refocus the NHIS and by extension the country’s health systems to ostensibly expand and improve access to primary healthcare across-board.
