Man, 33, hangs himself in cell

A 33-year-old inmate of the Ayikuma cell in the Shai Osu Doku district in the Greater Accra region, Anthony Atsu Adjei, has allegedly committed suicide.

The deceased is said to have hung himself with his shirt in the prison ward.

According to his brother Frank Adjei, who confirmed the incident to Class News, the deceased was arrested and detained in a police cell for allegedly stealing some electrical cables on Saturday, July 2.

He said the family suspect foul play in the circumstances leading to the death of their brother and have, therefore, called on the police to come clear on what actually caused his death behind cell since the story of hanging sounded strange to them.

“What I know is when you commit a crime and they take you to the police station, they are going to take off your shirt, your trousers and you will be there in your boxer shorts. So I have not heard this before [where inmates put on shirt] in a cell. Me, too, I have seen someone who has hanged himself before, and nobody can hang himself while sitting on the ground, so my mind is not clear about it. Therefore, the police should come out with the right evidence and I think Human rights people are there, so they should deal with this matter”, he stated.

Meanwhile, ASP Kantona, the Dodowa District commander, speaking to Class News insisted the deceased committed suicide.

According to him, the deceased hanged himself with his polo shirt, but fell on the ground after dangling for a while.

He said the autopsy report will disclose whether there was foul play or not “but I don’t suspect any foul play on the part of the police or anyone”.

The body has since been deposited at the police hospital awaiting autopsy.
