Muslims urged to ensure peace during election

Madam Ramiatu Baba, a Research Fellow of the Ghana Muslims Academy, has called on Muslims to eschew all forms of violence since their follower, the Prophet Mohammed, never indulged in violence.

She said the country needed peace as she prepared towards the general election in November and all should ensure peaceful co-existence and avoid anything that would generate chaos.

Madam Baba made the call when delivering this year’s A.M. Mujahid Ramadan Lecture in Accra.

The lecture, organised by Ghana Muslims Academy, was on the theme: “Consolidating Good Governance in Ghana: The Role of Muslim Youth’’.

Madam Baba said education was the key to development and urged parents to invest in their wards’ education to secure them a brighter future.

She said the Ramadan enjoined them to repent from their sins and rededicate themselves to the service of Allah adding that the month-long fasting would be useless if they reverted to their old ways of doing things.

She reminded them that Islam stood for peace and urged them to be law abiding and co-operate with those in authority as well as their neighbours to ensure peace.

Madam Baba said tranquility was vital and essential for every individual, family, community, country and the entire world adding that tranquility and co-operation would pave way for development.

“Let us co-operate in our homes, marital lives, workplaces, campaigns, rallies, worship places or even on our sick beds,” she said.

Alhaji Yakubu Anderson, the General Secretary of Ghana Muslim Academy, urged the youth to desist from being used by disgruntled politicians to cause confusion.

“The law will not forgive you if are caught indulging in electoral malpractices,” he said, adding that they should rather concentrate on their education in order to secure a better future.
