Gov’t committed to resourcing police – Bani

Government remains committed to equipping the country’s security service with modern infrastructure in the run-up to the November polls, Minister for the Interior Prosper Bani has said.

Mr Bani gave the assurance at a news conference at the Police Headquarters in Accra Friday June 24.

“The government on its part has laid down the critical policing infrastructure and it is continuing to transform the professional and logistical equipment for effective policing. We are all aware of the financial constraints that face the organisation, however, we will continue to do our best to provide the needed and necessary support to address this as they unfold,” he stated.

Mr Bani said government would invest in modern technology for the Ghana Police Service and admonished them to remain neutral in the discharge of their duties.

“The cardinal principle of current government policies is heavy investment in technology including computerisation that speeds up routine task, enhances accuracy, efficiency, and reduces human error. You are expected to remain neutral, professional, and vigilant throughout the whole process.

“Likewise, government encourages all political leaders with security concerns to approach the IGP for assistance. You [police] must respond to security challenges in a way that will enhance our national image. Of the greatest importance is the need to keep an eye on the activities of all the so-called private security forces that are increasingly being linked with political parties,” he noted.
