Wenchi NADMO plant trees to prevent disasters

Wenchi, Oct 20, GNA – Wenchi District Secretariat of National Disaster and Management Organisation (NADMO) on Friday spent about four hours to plant tree seedlings, grass and cleaned the premises of Wenchi Tomato factory to mark the celebration of World Disaster Reduction Day. The theme for the celebration was, “With risk turning the tide on disaster for sustainable development”, with the objective to create disaster awareness among the people.

Mr Yaw Gyan, District NADMO Co-ordinator, said disaster management is not the preserve of any one organisation and there is the need for all to lend a hand to mitigate the effects of floods, bushfires and rainstorms.

He said the tree seedlings and grass planted are meant to help prevent disasters and that the district secretariat had put in place an emergency action plan to reduce their effects. Mr Gyan mentioned chieftaincy and religious conflicts as other causes of disasters and said plans are underway to mount a vigorous educational campaign to stem the tide.
