Two Manhyia Government Hospital staff beaten

Two personnel of the Manhyia Government Hospital, including a nurse, sustained various degrees of injury after relatives of a patient assaulted them.

Emmanuel Kutugel and Saliu Awudu were attacked by Kalilu Ahmed and Fuseini Abdul Rahman, siblings who had insisted on seeing their sick mother outside visiting hours.

The alleged culprits went to the hospital on Wednesday and asked to be allowed to enter the wards though it was not yet time for visits.

When the security officer refused to grant their request, they pounced on him and beat him up.

The nurse, Mr. Awudu, who attempted to separate them and stop the commotion, was also assaulted.

Following a distress call to Manhyia Divisional Police Command, the suspects were arrested in the course of the exchanges.

Acting Commander, Superintendent Nana Dr. Samuel Nyamekye Adane- Ameyaw, condemns such misconduct.

“There was a cut on the face of the nurse, and look a nurse who is attending to your sick mother who is on admission you come and assault him “I think these people should have been reasonable enough.”

He wondered why the two gentlemen, despite the hospital being a restricted zone could attack the staff without any provocation.

“Even during wars, if somebody runs to a hospital or medical center, that person is not supposed to be pursued by his attacker. It is same as someone running to take refuge at an embassy of another country in warzones. You cannot enter to attack him. I want the people of Kumasi and Ghana to know this.”

Though the two, Ahmed and Fuseini Abdul Rahman have been granted bail, police say they would be arraigned before court to serve as deterrent for others.

“We have processed them for court. Even though we’ve granted them bail, we are still bent on processing them so that it will serve as deterrent to themselves and to the public,” says Supt. Nana Dr. Adane-Ameyaw.
