Head of the Department of Research at the Kofi Annan Peace Keeping Training Center, Dr. Kwesi Aning, has urged the securities agencies to broaden their investigations into the possible ISIS infiltration in Ghana.
The caution comes after the Ghana Armed Forces begun probing the circumstances surrounding a possible ISIS recruit in the military.
The officer, identified as 26-year-old Private Bawa Abdul Rahman, is believed to have links with the terror group.
This is the third Ghanaian reported to have connections with Islamic State.
Speaking to Starr News, Dr. Aning said it is important for a thorough probe to be conducted in order to understand the extent of the involvement of the militant group in Ghana.
“First, there should be a statement that is open, that is factual and as detailed as possible. There is nothing particularly exciting or dangerous about an individual joining Islamic State. What we need to understand is the wider ramification of the developments that is arising out of their emergence.
“…What we need to understand is that, it is an extremely wealthy organisation with linkages to the international oil market and therefore Islamic state has started what it calls the Army of the south and recruits are paid at least $1,000 a month to undertake their operations,” he stated.
