Tenants urged to secure legal rent documents

Mr Douglas Mackenzie Kpodo, the Eastern Regional Director of the Department of Rent Control, has counselled tenants to seek proper legal documents when renting a house.

This, he said, would help do away with misunderstanding and fraud that often led to rent litigations.

Mr Kpodo, speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Koforidua, additionally advised tenants to avoid paying monies to landlords to complete premises meant to be rented to them.

He said his office recorded 153 cases in the first quarter of this year (2016) as compared to 191during the same period in the previous year, (2015).

he reduction in the number of cases, he said, was due to intermittent transfers and awareness creation by officials of the Rent Control Department.

He said most of the reported cases are rent arrears, assessment, refund of rent advance and landlords absconding with prospective tenant’s monies.
