Some candidates sitting the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (B.E.C.E) have been reportedly stopped from writing their papers due to a mix-up in their index numbers.
It is unclear who directed the affected students who are writing the exams in the Eastern region to discontinue writing the papers because of the irregularity.
Starr News has, however, learnt that they have been asked to re-register next year to sit the exams. There are similar reports from Tema and other parts of Ghana about the mix-up of index numbers for the BECE candidates.
Some parents have expressed their displeasure over the development and have called on WAEC to address it.
Meanwhile, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) said it cannot be blamed for the situation.
Speaking to Starr News the Public Relations Officer for WAEC Agnes Teye Cudjoe said registration of students was done “at the school level which is then uploaded onto WAEC’s website.”
“When it gets to registration, any anomaly which comes about as a result of the registration process should be traced back to the school. WAEC cannot be held responsible for any mix-up in index numbers,” Cudjoe emphasized.
She advised supervisors of the affected schools to write a report to WAEC to carry out investigations.
