Examinations body West African Examination Council (WAEC) has denied media reports that it has announced plans to cancel some papers in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) following a mix-up of the index numbers of some of the candidates.
On Tuesday June 14, there were media reports that candidates in the Eastern Region would be made to rewrite some of the papers following inconsistencies in their index numbers.
But Rev. Dr. Sam Nii Nmai Ollenu, head of WAEC has said these publications are mischievous and intended to discredit the conduct of the examination by WAEC.
“The incidents that we’ve had reports on are the normal ones; people being caught with mobile phones when they don’t have to have mobile phones on them…and we feel that those are normal issues that can be dealt with,” he said.
“We don’t have any intention, neither have we announced anywhere that we’re going to cancel any paper…why should we cancel any paper when everything is going on well,” he questioned in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM Tuesday June 14.
This year’s edition of the BECE commenced Monday June 13 with a total of 461,013 candidates from 14,267 public and private Junior High Schools taking part in the week-long external examination to enable them gain admission into Senior High Schools.
