Accra floods due to impunity – Peace Council

The recurrence of floods in Accra has been blamed on the impunity being enjoyed by people who go against sanitation by-laws in the country.

The Chairman of the National Peace Council, Rev Professor Emmanuel Asante, who made these remarks, was saddened by construction of buildings in waterways without recourse to law, a situation he said causes flood whenever there is a heavy downpour.

The capital was hit by another flood that submerged most suburbs on Thursday, June 9, 2016, a year after a similar inundation caused the death of close to 160 people.

But Rev Prof Asante attributed the recurrence of flood to a number of reasons including shielding lawbreakers from punishment.

“Why is it that people have been allowed to build on water ways?” he asked rhetorically.

He told Accra-based Citi FM Saturday, June 11 that: “It is impunity” that is causing the perennial floods in Accra.
