Stop empty rhetoric and end floods – Opuni to politicians

The Christian Council of Ghana has descended heavily on politicians demanding an end to the empty promises in fixing the flooding situation in the country especially in the capital, Accra.

The comments come after several communities were submerged in flood after hours of torrential rainfall Thursday.

Properties worth millions of cedis were lost to the floods while a two-year-old girl lost her life in Tema.

In an interview with Starr News, the General Secretary of the Christian Council Reverend Dr. Kwabena Opuni Frimpong said it is now clear city authorities are not getting it right in preventing another June 3 disaster.

According to Dr. Opuni, the Mayor of Accra Alfred Oko Vanderpuije deceived the entire nation when he declared during the June 3 memorial that country would not experience flooding again.

Dr. Opuni Frimpong said it is high time action replaced the rhetoric to stop the needless loss of lives and property anytime it rains.

“What kind of promises are we receiving, are they just empty promises, rhetoric that are not giving way to action…if huge sums of monies were spent, where did the money go, what job was done,” Opuni said.

He added: “We have reached a point where rhetoric must give way to real action, it is like we are being given promises that now it is becoming accepted, public confidence is at stake here.”

Meanwhile, the Interior minister, Proper Bani is leading a host of government officials to tour areas affected by Thursday’s floods.

The team is lamenting the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drains by residents.

They argue that the situation is affecting the progress of work and efforts by authorities to de-silt choked drains in the national capital.
