Police seize 3 AK47 riffles; launch manhunt for owner

The Police in the Northern Region have seized three serviceable AK47 riffles which were concealed in a sack of rice with magazines and 160 live ammunitions.

The arms and ammunition, which were procured by one Dapaa Jaboni in Chereponi and Bawku, were being transported to Bortor in the Kintampo district of the Brong Ahafo Region when they were seized Wednesday evening.

According to the Police, the weapons were destined to fuel a protracted chieftaincy dispute between the Bawa and Chawchaw gates of Bortor.

Jaboni, who is known to belong to the Bawa gate, has been declared wanted by the Police in Kintampo, ACOP Johnson Akrofi told journalists Thursday, adding the Police will not relent on its effort to arrest him.

He said the Police picked intelligence that Jaboni had travelled to Chereponi and Bawku to purchase weapons to foment trouble in Bortor, hence set in motion surveillance on him.

ACOP Akrofi said Jaboni was in transit in Tamale after acquiring the weapons when a Police source identified him but he managed to escape before personnel from the Sankpala Police Station arrived.
