Video: Remembering June 3 – Survivors tell their struggles

A memorial service was held to recollect the painful experience of the twin disaster that occurred at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle claiming over 153 lives on June 3, 2015.

Survivors, family members of victims, sympathizers, as well as dignitaries were present at the memorial service held at the Rev. Bruce Memorial Methodist Church Adabraka, Accra.

According to some of the survivors who sustained serious injuries, life has not been easy a year after the incident.

“I lost everything and haven’t been able to [recover from the loss]. I sold carpets close to the Goil Filling station but lost them all in the fire. One year down the line, I still have to borrow clothes and survive from various funds.”

One Nice Kumordzi Agbanu noted that people stare a lot at her whenever she stepped out of the house [because of the scare from the tragic incident]. To add to her woes, people ran away from her and get irritated whenever her skin touches theirs; stating emphatically a scenario in a ‘trotro’ while on her way to Dzorwulu.

“In fact, I felt really bad that day. I sat by a woman in a “trotro” heading to Dzorwulu. The moment my hands touched hers, she bought pure water and washed her hands. I really felt terrible and disheartened but I thank God I’m still alive.”

These were the few challenges survivors face even a year after the twin disaster that got Ghana mourning.
