NPP’s Maxwell Kofi Jumah has described recent comments of the topmost man in the Police Service as “irresponsible”, for his attempt to ‘block’ social media on Election Day.
The former NPP lawmaker noted that Mr. John Kudalor is not “serious” with his thinking and rubbished the block of social media strongly.
“IGP’s comment is irresponsible. His comment on social media and other issues are all irresponsible. Who gave him that authority to block social media? Where is that powers coming from? What even came to his head to say such thing … that is evil, and we must not tolerate that in any democratic society,” he stated in an interview on NEAT FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie.’
Ghana’s police chief has noted that if it gets to the crunch, nothing and nobody can stop him from blocking social media sites on Election Day if that is what it would take to safeguard the peace and security in the country.
Mr. Kudalor’s comment was in response to flak hurled at him by critics over his consideration to blackout social media during the November 7 general elections to ensure the process is peaceful.
The IGP said the use of social media by politicians, especially from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for election-related activities, has created tension in the country, hence his proposal.
But Kofi Jumah has categorically stated that the IGP must apologize for his comment – “He must apologize to Ghanaians for undermining the constitution. What he said amounts to preparing for a coup. He should read the constitution well.”
He, however, warned that – “The IGP should be very careful. He is not above anybody. His uniform doesn’t make him Lord.”
