We will reduce killer tariffs – NPP

National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Sammy Awuku has kicked against government’s intent to inaugurate a task force to audit prepaid meters.

Deputy Minister of Power, John Jinapor announced on Tuesday during the launch of the second Ghana Renewable Energy Fair.

He pledged government’s commitment to resolving the problem with the prepaid meters that is causing trouble for users of electricity and also advised electricity consumers to adopt a good behaviour to conserve energy in order to reduce the high tariffs.

But addressing the issue on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Sammy Awuku held strongly that the inauguration of a task force to audit the faulty meters will not be very useful for the nation so far as electricity supply, as well as reduction of the high tariffs, are concerned.

According to him, the government’s measure is nothing but an ‘Awam strategy’ – to wit a sham approach towards resolving the crises.

Sammy Awuku was of the view that what electricity consumers need is not a task force but a government that is determined to solve the problem.

He noted on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ that due to the failure of the government to rectify the energy crises, users of prepaid meters have to contend with the challenges that accompany its usage.

He recounted that nowadays, using the prepaid meters is like using a “vanishing cream” because the credits run too quick, pushing users to incur huge costs.

Mr. Awuku expressed utter confidence in the New Patriotic Party, stressing that “the situation we find ourselves in, it calls for a determined and bold leadership . . . I can confidently tell you NPP will reduce these killer tariffs.”

“You are voted into power to propel the country forward and mitigate [the] suffering of the citizenry, and if reducing these tariffs will make life comfortable for the ordinary Ghanaian, the NPP will work towards slashing them (tariffs),” he added.
