The Kaneshie Division of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) recorded 1,777 motor accidents at the end of the third quarter of this year. Chief Inspector J. K. Abban, Greater Accra Police Public Relations officer, described the figure as high saying this represents a rise of about 15 per cent over last year’s figure of 1,511. He said with the exception of the number of injured which has fallen to 551 from last year’s 745, the number of persons killed this year has shot up from 61 to 70. The total number of vehicles involved rose from 2,517 for the whole of 1996 to 2,818 as at the end of last month. Most of them are beyond repair. Chief Inspector Abban attributed the situation to impatience on the part of drivers, poor maintenance of vehicles, disregard for traffic regulations and negligence of pedestrians and urged motorists and other road users to be more safety-conscious. The Kaneshie Division of MTTU is one of the units which records highest number of accidents.
