Probe teachers’ awards – GNAT Secretary

Wa, Oct. 6, GNA – Mr Martin Asamannaba, Upper West Regional Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) on Monday called on the Regional Director of Education to institute a probe into how the award of incentive packages to teachers is handled in the region.

He alleged there was no transparency in the procedures for giving out the incentives in the various districts, “to the extent that some district directors in the region have their own criteria on the choice of beneficiaries.”

Mr Asamannaba was addressing teachers in the Wa District at a brief ceremony to mark “World Teachers Day” celebration at Wa. The day was celebrated simultaneously in all the district capitals of the region.

Mr Asamanaba lauded the distance education programme, saying it would enable teachers to further their education. However, they are dissatisfied with the government’s handling of conditions of service negotiated by GNAT, he added.

According to him, travel and transport allowances, maintenance allowances and supervision allowances have never been paid. To achieve quality teaching and learning, he said, the government and the Ghana Education Service should ensure that teachers were adequately remunerated.
