Accra, Sept. 30, GNA – Ghana and Japan on Tuesday signed an agreement in Tokyo to begin the construction of the first phase of the Accra-Yamoransa road next month.
The 22-million dollar first phase project, covering a 41-kilometer road from Kasoa to Winneba would be completed in 2005.
A statement from the Office of the President said the second phase of 57-kilometre road from Winneba to Yamoransa junction would start soon after the completion of the first phase and that the agreement was a booster to the President John Agyekum Kufuor’s current visit to Japan. Mr Eric Oduro-Konadu, Deputy Chief Executive of the Ghana Highway signed on behalf of Ghana, while Mr Isao Nagashima, Deputy General Manager of Taisee of Japan signed form his company, which would undertake the constructional work.
It said in a post interaction meeting with the Presidential Press Corp, Mr. Kwabena Agyepong, Press Secretary to the President underscored government’s commitment to improve the Accra-Kumasi, Aflao-Accra-Cape Coast roads.
The statement said Mr. Agyepong reiterated President Kufuor’s principle that, “we cannot talk of growing economy until we develop our infrastructure”.
It said 126-mile stretch of the Accra-Cape Coast road, constituted an integral part of the ECOWAS coastal Trans-Atlantic Highway network road system, adding that the memorandum of understanding with the Japanese government was signed last year.
