Residents of Alorkpe/Alive/Azizakpe cry for help

The people of Alorkpe, Alive and Azizakpe in the Ada West District have called for help to protect their communities from being washed away by the sea.

Mr John Otu, the former Assemblyman for the area, made the call when he took the Ghana News Agency round to inspect communities that had been devastated or submerged by the sea.

The sea waves had destroyed a number of island communities along the banks of the Volta Lake near the Ada Estuary while others are at risk if urgent steps are not taken by government to save the situation.

Mr Otu attributed the problem to the wrong positioning of the Ada Sea Defence Wall.

He said the project should have commenced from the estuary to protect about 20 island communities while the 200- metre stretch of land left unprotected had been submerged by the sea which continued to cause havoc to the rest of the communities.

Some sand-bags arranged by residents to prevent the sea from destroying their homes had been washed by the waves, Mr Otu said.
