Residents of Fulanikorpe introduce children’s toilet

Residents of Adofe-Fulanikorpe in the Kpando Municipality of the Volta Region have introduced “children’s toilet” concept under the Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) to enhance sanitation in the community.

A few households in the community also have separate toilets for visitors.

All 10 households in the farming community have ‘mini’ toilets with hand-washing facilities separately for children below five years.

The initiative is to encourage children to desist from defecating in bushes and reduce pressure on adult toilets.

Mr Adamu Papate, an Opinion Leader in the community, said the children’s toilets had smaller drop-holes unlike those of adults to prevent the messing up of adults’ toilets with bigger drop-holes. The drop-holes were neatly covered to prevent houseflies.

He said the ‘mini’ toilets were also to save mothers the trouble of having to empty chamber pots used by children and its associated sanitation challenges.

The Regional Inter-agency Co-ordinating Committee on Sanitation, which was on a monitoring and verification visit to the community, expressed satisfaction with the programme.

Mr Darkey Mensah, a member of the team, urged other communities to adopt the children’s toilet approach because children were key players in CLTS.
