The flagbearer of the Independent Peoples Party (IPP) Kofi Percival Akpaloo has slammed the country’s two major political parties, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for designating agents to monitor the ongoing limited registration exercise.
According to him, stationing agents to each registration centre is a waste of resources and should not be encouraged. He opines that the monies allocated to each of the agents could have been channelled into other developmental projects to benefit the country.
“We have sent observers to go round to monitor what is happening but to put someone there permanently for 10 days is waste of money because you have to feed the person and give him/her transport. Check the number of polling stations across the country and the amount to be spent. Such an amount can build a classroom or a school block in my hometown”, he disclosed.
Kofi Akpaloo indicates that the acrimonies that have characterized the limited registration exercise will be an expected routine until a national database is collated.
“What I am suggesting now is that we should combine the National Identification Authority (NIA) to the Electoral Commission (EC) so that when someone reaches the age of 18 he/she can easily be enrolled so we can have a central database”, he observed.
According to him, this will help minimize the pockets of violence that have characterized the exercise as the two bodies will be able to use less than two months to effectively implement such a proposition .
“This will stop the unnecessary tension, dirty slaps, pinching and the rest”, he concluded.
