NPP supporters besiege police station; demand Wontumi’s release

Information reaching ClassFMonline.com indicates that over 100 supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have gathered at the Central Police Station in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

Class FM’s correspondent in the region, Hafiz Tijani, reports that about 15 military men have been deployed to the area. Police officers have also mounted a barricade to prevent the protestors from advancing any further as police have positioned water cannons at vantage positions to disperse the crowd.

The supporters are protesting the arrest of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi Bosiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Police after he reported at the station to aid investigations.

He was placed on the police wanted list after a complaint of alleged assault on the Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Collins Owusu Amankwah, and the Secretary to the party in that constituency, Felix Ibrahim, at Krofrom in Kumasi.

According to reports, the incident took place on Sunday 1st May at a registration centre during the Electoral Commission’s (EC) limited registration exercise.
