EC to get tough on errant political parties

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has revealed that it will not be soft on political parties which violate rules and regulations relating to their conduct in the country.

The Chairperson of the Commission, Charlotte Osei, said the EC “will ensure that political parties are compliant with all relevant legislation and ensure that we have effective oversight of political parties”.

“For example, the Political Parties Law was passed in the year 2000 and we believe that it is time political parties live up to expectation,” she said.

This came to light at the launch of the five-year strategic plan of the commission on Tuesday 26 April 2016, in Accra.

According to her, any party seeking to gain the mandate to govern the country should be able to live by the EC’s rules and regulations.

She also revealed that the EC would set up a functioning legal team to aid the commission in the day-to-day running of the institution.

“One of the things we will do under the new strategic plan is to have a fully functional legal department in place,” she stated.
