Committee appointed to oversee devt of racecourse market

Kumasi, Sept. 22, GNA- A seven-member committee comprising a representative each of all seven zones at the racecourse market and the assemblyman for the area has been set up to oversee the development of the market.

The committee will open a separate account for revenue realized from the market towards the provision of infrastructure there.

This was the outcome of a meeting between representatives of the traders and Mr Maxwell Kofi Jumah, Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, over how best to rehabilitate basic amenities at the market.

The meeting was to forestall a confrontation between the traders and the Bantama Sub-Metro over the collection of toll at the market. The traders contended that some of them were contributing 4.5 million cedis in tolls every month and wondered why the sub-metro could not be provide certain basic needs such as street lights and drains at the market.

They held that they were constantly at the mercy of thieves and other criminals immediately after dusk.

The traders therefore asked the Metropolitan Chief Executive to ensure that only personnel from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) collect tolls from the market.
