Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom and his Progressive People’s Party (PPP) will be better off joining the biggest opposition group, New Patriotic Party (NPP), for the November 7 polls, former head of the Political Science Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Richard Amoako Baah has advised.
“If he joins them [NPP], it gives him a bigger clout and some leverage. Can you imagine Papa Kwesi Nduom and Nana Addo on the same side against President Mahama? That will be so difficult for President Mahama,” he noted.
The founder of the PPP, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, reiterated the stance of his party not to merge with any political party in a recent interview with Class News’ Emefa Apawu on 505 but welcomed the prospects of a coalition.
Commenting on Dr Nduom’s position on Class FM’s Executive Breakfast Show on Monday, April 18, Dr Amoako Baah said he would prefer Dr Nduom pitched camp with the Danquah-Dombo-Busia family.
There have been some suggestions for all political parties who believe in the ideologies of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to form an alliance to break the dominance of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the main opposition NPP.
However, Dr. Baah believes such a move will be a fruitless venture. According to him, “Papa Kwesi [Nduom] was able to join Kufour, so, if I were in his shoes, and I want to join a party, it will not be a smaller party, but a bigger party. If he wants to join someone, it is likely he will join NPP.”
“The idea of this Nkrumahist [front] is not very solid and just an umbrella that all of them fall under. If you are going to join a party, you have to see some real benefits of doing that. If you merge and still cannot win, what is the point in merging and losing your identity?” he questioned when he spoke to host Ekow Mensah-Shalders.
