President Kufuor leaves for UN Session in New York

Accra, Sept.19, GNA – President John Agyekum Kufuor leaves Accra on Friday night for New York to attend the 58th Session of the United Nations General Assembly that opened on September 16. Central on the agenda for the Session would be terrorism and the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
A statement issued in Accra on Friday and signed by Mr Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Press Secretary to the President, said President Kufuor would hold bilateral talks with US President George W. Bush. It said in addition to addressing the General Assembly on September 24, President Kufuor would also deliver a speech at Columbia University on September 25.
The statement said President Kufuor would travel to Tokyo, Japan to address the Tokyo International Conference on Africa’s Development (TICAD III) on September 29.
The Government of Japan instituted the TICAD Initiative in 1993 to discuss alternative pathways to Africa’s development. This year’s Conference would among other things focus on support for the New Partnership For Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and Africa-Asia relations.
The statement said President Kufuor would give a lecture at the UN University in Tokyo and deliver a paper on: “World Food Security” at Nihon University on September 30.
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Mrs Mercy Bampo-Addo, Deputy Minister at the Presidency would accompany President Kufuor, who is expected back home on Sunday, October 5.
