Security chiefs meet over Bolga clashes

Leading security figures in the Upper East Region met today to bring a resolution to misunderstandings that resulted in clashes between rival chieftaincy factions Sunday night at Bolgatanga.

The chair of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Albert Abongo, who is also the regional minister, announced that measures were in place to control the situation whilst action is taken to permanently deal with the crisis

“We are calling for a REGSEC meeting. In the meantime to keep the situation under control. We are asking for reinforcement from Bawku, from the military attachment and the police unit over there. The commander of the Northern Command is also sending in some military men from Tamale. So, generally, the situation is under control and we will keep it as such throughout the night to ensure that there is no disturbance whatsoever.”

He said the security would be lookout “to apprehend anybody who will attempt to foment any trouble”.

One person was killed and eight others were injured in the fighting in the regional capital, Bolgatanga.

The clash, according to regional Minister Albert Abongo, occurred between supporters of rival chiefs Naba Joseph Apakre Nyaaba and Naba Raymond Alafia Abilba during a funeral ceremony around 2pm Sunday April 2, at Dapoore-Tindongo near the Bolgatanga Sports Stadium.

The eight injured people were shot at the funeral grounds while the deceased was later attacked in an isolated incident.
