Wampah is Ghana’s worst governor ever – NPP

A Deputy Communications Officer for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Asamoah Gyamfi, has observed that the immediate past governor of the central bank, Dr Henry Kofi Wampah, was the “worst governor” in the history of Ghana.

According to him, Dr Wampah, during his tenure as governor, failed to implement prudent policies to stabilize the local currency against the major trading currencies.

Speaking on TOP FM’s morning show hosted byEkourba Gyasi, on Friday, Asamoah Gyamfi stated that “he [Dr Wampah] failed to control the monetary policy and that affected cost of living in the country.”

“He is the worst governor we ever had in our history,” he emphasized. Dr Wampah has stepped down as Governor of the Central Bank earlier than expected because he was due to go on retirement in August.

He is quoted to have said that “I told the President I wanted to leave office early and we have agreed that I will exit at the end of March”.

But Asamoah Gyamfi thinks he performed abysmally as governor.

“He made a serious mistake in 2012 by giving GH S 8.7 billion as loan to the government to engage in the 2012 elections and that is why we are suffering today,” he added.

“The other one is the directive on dollar account that he brought, that was a bad decision,” he said.

A member of the ruling party, the National Democratic Congress, Jacob Adongo said Dr Wampah played his part in contributing to the stability of the cedi. “He cannot be blamed for the macro instability in the country. I will blame everything on the NPP because they left that legacy,” he told host Ekourba Gyasi.

He however said Dr Wampah has several questions to answer on the DKM microfinance saga.

“The BoG boss should have known that DKM was duping customers but he failed so for me he has questions to answer on that note, otherwise he was a good governor,” he said.
