UFP man sprays GH¢1 cash

Isaac Kwartey, who contested the Abuakwa North by-election on the ticket of the United Front Party, was yesterday arrested by some police officers at the polling station at New Tafo chief’s palace after he shared GH¢1 to voters to influence them to vote for him.

The angry police officers, who detained Mr Kwartey for some time, later asked him to leave the polling center.

The Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday, March 29, held the Abuakwa North by-election to replace the slain Member of Parliament (MP) Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu in accordance with Article 112 (5) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

The election was successful but the turnout was low at almost all the 69 polling stations.

The electorate didn’t face any difficulties in the voting process.

At total of 40,068 registered voters were expected to cast their ballot in 69 polling stations in the Abuakwa North Constituency by-election.

The MP was allegedly stabbed to death at his residence at Shiashie in Accra by a teenager, Daniel Asiedu, who is currently facing trial.

At the end of the voting, Gifty Twum Ampofo led the two other contenders- Samuel Frimpong, Ghana Freedom Party and Isaac Kwartey of United Freedom Party, who had no votes at some of the polling stations.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) said it withdrew from the by-election to give reverence to the late MP.

The national campaign manager of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Peter Mac Manu and some officials, Akua Donkor, flagbearer of Ghana Front Party, toured some of the centers to witness the process.
