Celebration of Easter: Kwahu placed on terror alert

The Ghana Police Service has deployed anti-terror personnel to Kwahu in the Eastern region ahead of the annual Easter celebrations.

Every year thousands of revelers across Ghana head to the mountainous areas of Kwahu and its environs to while off time throughout the festivities which last for close to a week.

Following the upsurge in extremists’ activities in West Africa and Europe, the Ghana Police said it will not take chances and has fashioned out measures to protect citizens who will be gathering at public places to celebrate Christ’s death.

The Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service Superintendent Cephas Arthur said the intelligence officers have already been deployed to embark on reconnaissance ahead of the festivities.

He said “specialized anti-terrorism personnel” have also been placed at holiday spots throughout the country as part of measures to strengthen security to ensure an “incident-free Easter.”

“Deployment of intelligence officers have been done already at the national level. We are up to the task and we know Kwahu has become synonymous with Easter and brings up security concerns, so it is up to the police to create an enabling environment to enable celebrants do whatever they want to do without any hindrance,” Superintendent Arthur told Accra-based Citi FM.

Meanwhile, the Mpraeso District Police Commander, ASP Emmanuel Darkwa Owiredu, has disclosed that about 400 extra Police personnel will be deployed to Kwahu to maintain law and order during this year’s Easter Festivities.
