NPP defense on SA security training absurd – Aning

The Director of Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center has rejected the defense being put up by the New Patriotic Party for enlisting South African expertise to train its party’s internal security.

The three ex-police officers are in BNI custody for suspicious conducts and engaging in acts that have security implications.

They were allegedly brought into Ghana by Captain Koda, the head of security for NPP flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa-Akufo-Addo.

NPP claims the training was to enable its security personnel perfect crowd control and better protect the flagbearer.

But Dr. Kwesi Aning says the long term effects of using private security forces by Political parties could be dire.

“Either by South African law or the legislative instrument governing privatization of security in Ghana there is no locus for that line of argument.

“When you form your own quasi-military and you win power, how do you demobilise them or do you automatically absorb them into the formal security structures,” Dr. Aning queried.
