Driver’s mate on drug charges remanded

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded a driver’s mate, Kweku Stephens, for supplying narcotic drugs to prospective buyers without lawful authority.
Kweku pleaded not guilty to the charge, but he was remanded by the Court, presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh to reappear on April 7.

Presenting the facts of the case, the Deputy Superintendent of Police, (DSP) Kweku Bempah told the court that the complainants were Police officers stationed at Kaneshie District Headquarters, while the accused person was a driver’s mate at the Kaneshie-Dansoman Lorry station.

He said on March 16, at about 1030 hours, the Police had a tip off that Kweku was selling dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs to interested smokers at the Kaneshie-Dansoman Lorry station.

He told the court that upon the information, the Police Patrol Team, with two detective officers of the Criminal Investigation Department, was dispatched to the scene.

DSP Bempah said on arrival, the accused person was met selling the suspected drugs to the smokers in a wooden kiosk.

He was arrested with 122 wrapped dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, one pack of white wrapper, a lighter and cash of GHC 16.00 concealed in a black polythene bag.

However, the smokers escaped, he said.

He said Kweku was sent to the Kaneshie Police Station together with the exhibits.

During investigations, he mentioned one Kweku Azologo as his source of supply but he said the suspect could not be traced.

The prosecution said the accused person admitted the offence in his caution statement and pleaded for forgiveness.
