Sustainability was at the heart of the tour by the delegation from the African Rights Initiative International (ARII), an international relief and development organisation to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital March 18, 2016.
Mr. Alex Asiedu chairman of ARII who doubles as chairman of the Atlantic Trust Holding Ltd. in addressing the prevailing problems regarding the sustainability of the ICU, assured the hospital that ARII will, as a matter of urgency, set up a fund to financially support the unit to function at its optimum.
“I was saddened at the state of the unit during a trip with my team to donate to the hospital and that is what motivates us to render our continual support for the unit,” he revealed.
Dr Cris Owoo, Consultant in Anaesthetist in charge of critical care at the hospital, explained that the ICU is very sensitive to the extent that it must not only be well resourced, but well maintained to ensure it runs efficiently.
He cautioned that if the facility does not get stable and regular support from donor partners, government and well-meaning citizens, it may not be able to achieve the purpose for which it was set up.
It was in this direction that he disclosed that the unit required regular supply of consumables to avoid the situation where the unit will downgrade and eventually close down due to lack of resources to run it.
“…Though we are doing our bit to support the unit, it’s extremely expensive so we are appealing to all and sundry to come and support so that the unit can be run at a cost affordable to the ordinary Ghanaian, as it can be you, a sister or a love one in need of the facility in future,” Dr Owoo asserted.
