Deputy Minister of Education responsible for tertiary, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwah, has implored polytechnics agitating over the upgrading brouhaha, to be patient with government, assuring that all polytechnics will be upgraded in the cause of time.
The Deputy Minister made the plea in a telephone interview on Atinka FM A.M Drive hosted by Kaakyire Offori Ayim. He debunked the assertion that the Ministry has neglected the expert’s committee’s report and is giving some institutions undue advantage over others.
“It has come to our notice that there are agitations in some institutions with the excuse that the Ministry has neglected them. I want them to be patient with us, with time all polytechnics will be upgraded. We are strictly working by the recommendations given to us by the expert panel report. The report was based on work with the Nation Council on Tertiary Education which is the advisory arm of the Ministry. After the deliberations, we arrived at using the 6-4 method that is upgrading six institution first and later add the four,” Mr Ablakwa explained.
Some students of the Cape Coast polytechnic have accused the Minister of sidestepping them in favour of Ho polytechnic which was not included in the initial committee report. The students took to the street on Tuesday to register their displeasure.
The Minister was speaking from India’s capital New Dehli, where he is attending an Ezim Bank TII Conference with the core of aim of tightening the bilateral ties between the host nation and Africa.
He also disclosed that India has devoted US$10billion to develop Africa in the areas of education, Technology and Agriculture
