False prophets deceiving people – Most Rev. Asante

President of the National Peace council, Most Rev. Emmanuel Asante has questioned the clerical authority of some self-acclaimed prophets in the country.

According to him, these “so called prophets” are only exploiting the belief of the public under the guise of miracles and spiritual intervention.

Over the years, the number of self-acclaimed pastors and prophets have increased from various denominational churches across the country with some claiming they can change into any animal.

Some also take advantage of the unsuspecting victims by taking them through unwarranted healing processes.

Speaking at a public lecture of the 50th anniversary of the Trinity Theological Seminary of the students’ representative council, the Most Rev. Emmanuel Asante urged the theologians to be modest and practice genuine Christian life. He also warned them not to associate themselves with charlatans who claim to be practicing the biblical teachings of Christ.

“Unfortunately people are exploiting the spiritual gullibility of our people and exploiting the situation to enrich themselves. Using religion to enslave a lot of people, to put fear in people, create tension in people’s homes… rob people of you their God giving joy.

This is something of a worry to all of us”.

Most rev. Emmanuel Asante also asked them to guard against prophets and politicians who engage in political predictions causing unnecessary tension during elections.

He said “there’s no reason why an election year should bring about physical and moral tension, psychological tension to people because people are vying for our mandate to rule us to develop our nation.

“I think it is important for politicians themselves to understand the word politics, what it is that they are trying to do so that they do not create a condition that would cause people to worry.”

The lecture was under the theme “the socio-political climate in Ghana: a theological response.
