K’si: Military to evict squatters from affordable housing project

Military personnel from the 48 Regiment in Accra have been deployed to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region to clear squatters living in the affordable housing projects in Asokore-Mampong.

The move is expected to pave way for the continuation and possible completion of works on the government abandoned state housing project.

Government has handed the project over to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) which has guaranteed enough funds to complete the project.

This comes after seven years of stalled work on the project due mainly to financial constraints on the part of government.

Resident Engineer of the project Richard Adjei explained that the military personnel are there to clear and scare the squatters away from the site.

‘The police are here but cannot do anything that is why we have to find a more forceful body to drive them away,’ he explained.
