Children orphaned by boat disaster need support

The main benefactor of the children who lost their parents in the 2006 Volta Lake Disaster has appealed to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection ; and philanthropic individuals and societies to support their upkeep.

Madam Grace Nabaku Blantyne, the Founder of Child Care Foundation, at Abotoase, in the Biakoye District, Volta Region, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the children were in dire need of material and financial assistance to access education and other social services.

Some of the children, she said, were five or six years old when the Foundation extended help to see them through their education to the Junior High School (JHS) level.

Madam Blantyne said, unfortunately, because of inadequate resources to continue funding their education, some of these children had become loiterers and they were being exploited by some fisher folks along the Volta Lake.

The Foundation, therefore, needed more help to be able to sustain the education and the nourishment of the children, she said.

She said the Foundation also provided assistance to single parents in critical need.

She expressed gratitude to Elder Samuel Tobin, the Chief Executive Officer of Tobinco Pharmaceuticals, who she said, had been providing immeasurable support towards the management of the Foundation.
