President John Mahama has sworn in John Kudalor as the substantive Inspector General of Police (IGP) with a call on him to check indiscipline on roads to avert unnecessary deaths.
Mr Kudalor has been acting as IGP since the retirement of Mohammed Alhassan in November last year.
Speaking during the swearing in, Mr Mahama said: “The 60 of our compatriots, who died in the accident on the Kintampo road, I believe that the Police Service is working with the National Road Safety Commission to continue to do its best to see how we can bring down the rate of vehicle accidents.”
The president noted that Ghana was among African states with one of the highest death rates from accidents.
In response, Mr Kudalor assured the president of the readiness of the police to enforce discipline on the roads and said road accidents were a matter of concern to the Ghana Police Service as well.
“With this ghastly incident happening, which is one too many, we are going to go back to the board and ensure that our men on the road also implement the law to its letter to ensure that lives are saved.”
He expressed gratitude to the president for the confidence he had reposed in him by making him the substantive IGP.
