Peace returns to Tafo

Peace has returned to Old Tafo, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, after several days of commotion that left many dead.

The violent clashes between Muslim youth and natives of the town occurred following a misunderstanding over the fencing of a cemetery.

The scuffle also led to the destruction of properties and left many injured, compelling security agencies to place a curfew on the community.

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE on Sunday, ASP Mohammed Yussif Tanko, the Ashanti Regional Police Spokesman, said peace had returned to Tafo.

According to him, residents of the town, including both feuding factions, had comported themselves well since the curfew was imposed.

The dusk to dawn curfew which was placed on Old Tafo was reviewed to 8pm to 4am on Friday by the security agencies due to the improved security situation. . The police PRO stated that there had not been any clashes or security problems since the curfew was reviewed.

The situation, he said, was commendable and a clear indication that the people of Old Tafo were gradually embracing peace.

ASP Tanko expressed hope that the people of Old Tafo would continue to be law abiding and accommodate each other as they used to do.

He however could not state the exact date on which the curfew at Old Tafo would be lifted, saying, the REGSEC would take that decision when it found it necessary.
