The group spearheading the campaign for the breakaway of some parts of the Volta, Upper East and Northern regions from Ghana is planning to sue government.
The Homeland Study group is accusing successive governments of reneging on a promise to develop the former Western Togoland after they joined Ghana in the 195O’s.
Leaders of the group have reportedly received a letter from the Attorney General, accusing them of treason.
But their Chairman Charles Kormi Kudjordjie in an interview with Starr News said the accusation is outrageous.
Mr Kudjordjie’s group claimed that residents of the Western Togoland voted to become a union with the Gold Coast (now Ghana) but the union had not been established up till now and that Ghana opted to be a unitary state in 1956 [referendum] to be in union with a common constitution with the Western Togoland and the Gold Coast but there had been no unionized constitution up to date.
The group further claimed that the Western Togoland was not incorporated in the act establishing the Gold Coast by Queen Elisabeth of the United Kingdom.
