Egala promises “committed and sincere leadership”

Bolgatanga, Aug. 29, GNA – Mr Iddris Egala, an aspiring chairman of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), on Thursday promised “a committed and sincere leadership service” to build a formidable party capable of capturing power in the 2004 election.

He was addressing the Upper East regional executives of the party as part of his nation-wide campaign to solicit votes at the national congress of the CPP scheduled for September 20, this year. He said as part of his plans to re-establish a firm grip of the CPP on the country’s political landscape, he would concretise the various structures of the party by uniting its front and enforcing party discipline.

Mr Egala noted that without strengthening the structures at the grassroots there would be no meaningful development within the party. He appealed to well-meaning sympathisers of the CPP who have left the party to rejoin unconditionally and support its development. He said he had drawn up a programme to educate the youth and women to explain what the CPP stands for and what it can offer them.

Mr Egala said it had become necessary to change the perception of the youth who regarded the party as that of the aged.

He said there was the need to repackage the ideals and ideology of the party to make it more relevant to modern Ghanaian politics. Mr Egala expressed the need for the party to move ahead. “We would not sit down indefinitely for people to mess us up. Individuals cannot hold the party to a stand still,” he emphasised.

An aspiring treasurer, Mr Felix Amoah, noted that the financial state of the party would not improve if its admirers do not see any credibility within the party and support it.

He said there was poverty in the country because of unfavourable economic polices of the NPP and said a CPP government would pursue policies that would bring the needed relief to the people.
