Agona West Assembly to set-up sanitation tribunal

The Agona West Municipal Assembly would collaborate with the Judicial Service to establish a sanitation tribunal to trial sanitary offenders, Mr Charles Obeng -Inkoom, Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West has said.

Mr Obeng–Inkoom announced this when he addressed Police personnel, Fire Service, Environmental Health and Sanitation officers, keep fit clubs and members of the Agona Assembly after seven hours of clean-up exercise at Agona Swedru.

The exercise, which took place on Saturday, formed part of the activity to mark the National Sanitation Day Clean-up exercise initiated by Ministry of Local Government last year.

The MP said he would hold discussions with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Samuel Oppong to liaise with the head of the Judicial Service in the area towards the establishment of the tribunal.

According to the MP, the tribunal would deal drastically with people who threw refuse indiscriminately on the streets and other public places with impunity.

He said the assemblies and the central government continue to pay huge sums of money on waste management as a result of the bad habits of the people.

The MP commended Police personnel at Agona Swedru, Fire Service, Keep Fit Clubs and other personalities in the Municipality for their continued support to the program since its inception.

Mrs Cynthia Morrison, Agona West NPP Parliamentary Candidate, who descended into the gutter to remove refuse from chocked gutters called for a clean environment.

Mrs Morrison who is also the Director of Maryland Montessori Learning Center at Swedru, urged the people not to politicize the National Sanitation Day programme.

She stated that as soon as politics is read into the exercise, it would lose its relevance.

The NPP Parliamentary Candidate said in case of an outbreak of an epidemic, it would not affect only one party’s members.

She called on the people to keep their environment clean to avert contracting diseases such as meningitis that had claimed lives in Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, Northern and Eastern Regions.
