Accra’s Centenary Celebrations

The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Mr.. Nat Nunoo-Amartefio on Monday 27 October briefed newsmen in Accra on activities lined up for centenary celebrations of the Accra City Council ( Now Accra Metropolitan Assembly). The celebrations which will begin on the 1st of November will end in June 1998. It will be under the theme: “Accra yesterday, today and tomorrow”. Some of the activities include durbar of Chiefs, Lectures on the history of the city, an international conference of African Mayors, an exhibition of traditional regalia and sports. Mr.. Nunoo-Amarteifio said the population of the city at the time of its establishment a century ago was about 100,000 but this has shot up to over 3 million. He said steps would, therefore, have to be taken to put inplace more infrastructure to meet the ever increasing population of the city. The Chief Executive said, as part of efforts to tackle the sanitation problem in the city, the Assembly is negotiating with a Canadian Company to provide some equipment for waste disposal. He said the celebration will also focus on providing quality education for the people. In this regard, each of the six sub-Metropolitan Assemblies will be required to build at least one library to made reading material easily available to the people. The Chief Executive said the Assembly will soon publish a book on the history of Accra to give foreigners a good background of the traditions of the Ga people.
