Court remands labourer for robbery

An Accra Circuit Court on Monday remanded Prosper Asare Angmortey, a labourer, into police custody for robbery and causing harm.

Prosper pleaded not guilty to the charges and would re-appear on February 16.

Meanwhile, the Court also convicted Prosper on his own plea for escaping from lawful custody and deferred sentencing to a later date.

Prosecuting Chief Inspector E. Afful told the Court presided by Mr Aboagye Tandoh that on January 12, at about 1100 hrs, the accused scaled a wall and entered the house of one Daniel Gyampoh at Oyarifa and he was questioned.

He said the accused person was apprehended by the said Daniel and was later identified by the complainant as the person, who robbed them a few weeks ago.

The prosecution said on January 7, at about 0200 hrs, the accused broke into the complainant’s house, pulled a locally manufactured pistol and a knife and threatened the complainant and her father to surrender all monies in the house else he would kill them.

Chief Inspector Afful said in the process, the accused person pointed a knife at her, tore her shorts in an attempt to rape her but was interrupted by series of phone calls.

“After one of such calls, the accused insisted on the victim to surrender a brief case, which contained some foreign currencies which the complainant obliged,” he said.

He said the accused person then succeeded in robbing them of various sums including GH¢ 300, £ 500 and $587, which were kept in the brown briefcase together with 32 inches flat screen TV, one tablet, phones and a power bank to the tune of GH¢7,670. 00 and bolted.

He said accused person was brought to the Ayi Mensah Police station and at the station, he managed to escape but was arrested after a chase.
