Coalition calls for establishment of Ebola surveillance centres

Dr Gabriel Gbiel Benarkuu, National Chairman of the Ghana Coalition of NGOs in Health, has appealed for the establishment of Ebola surveillance centres at strategic border towns in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

These centres would help intensify awareness creation, early detection and control of the deadly disease in case of any possible outbreak.

Dr Benarkuu told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Sunyani that the centres ought to be established at areas such as Kofi-Badukrom, Gonokrom, Yaakrom.

These towns are situated along Ghana-Ivory Coast borders in the Dormaa East District.

Dr Benarkuu noted that many foreigners enter the country through these routes and because they do not go through thorough medical examination the country risk a possible outbreak.

He said although there is no outbreak of the disease in neighbouring Ivory Coast, precautionary measures ought to be put in place to curtail any possible future mishap.

Dr Benarkuu advised civil society and faith-based organisations to support in awareness creation especially on the symptoms of the disease.
