Mornah slams gov’t over utilities and fuel hikes

The national chairman of the People’s National Convention Bernard Mornah has described the recent utility tariff hikes and the new petroleum levies by the NDC administration as the height of insensitivity.

“I think that it is indeed a big disservice to the people of Ghana that at this particular time our government will be increasing utility prices and above all increase petroleum price,” Mornah said on Saturday during a discussion on Joy FM’s Newsfile.

The Trades Union Congress on Wednesday staged a massive demonstration to force government to reduce utility tariffs which took effect on December 14 and also reduce petroleum levies which were imposed on January 1.

According to Mr. Mornah, it is surprising that the NDC government would defend unjustified increases when it strongly imposed similar action by the erstwhile NPP administration.

“We demonstrated against a government at a time crude oil prices had risen to $120 dollars per barrel and we made the argument that it is not a government’s lot to constantly increase fuel prices in accordance with world prices and that you have a social responsibility to the people of Ghana.

“Today, crude oil prices have fallen to 30 or 31 dollars per barrel and when prices have fallen to this low, prices are increased on the local market.”
