GITMO two: Ghanaians overreacting – Wereko-Brobby

Former Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority Charles Wereko-Brobby has said Ghanaians are overreacting in the decision by government to accommodate two former inmates of the Guantanamo Bay prison two years.

The arrival of the two- Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby – has sparked massive public outcry in Ghana with many, including prominent religious organisations asking the Mahama-led administration to return them. The main opposition New Patriotic Party has backed calls for their return.

Others have argued their stay in the country makes Ghana susceptible to terror attacks.

But speaking to Nii Arday Clegg on the Morning Starr Monday, the outspoken engineer said most Ghanaians are not adequately informed on the matter. He said the seeming reliance on the American-based Fox News for information on the detainees is worrying.

“I’m not complacent when I say that the situation in Ghana does not indicate an imminent terrorist attack.

“The ex-detainees are not convicts and are not terrorists.

“For you to have terrorists in your country, there must be extremists who foster their course…These terrorist attacks are not done by foreigners, they are perpetuated by indigenes…in this matter, if you ask me I will say yes! Ghanaians have overreacted,” he stated.
