UCC SRC appeals to SSNIT to reduce rent

Cape Coast, Aug 21, GNA- The Students Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) on Thursday appealed to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to reduce its rent to make it more affordable for students.

Mr Sampson Owusu-Boateng, the SRC President, told the GNA that four occupants in a single room at the SSNIT hostel on campus pay 14.2 million cedis annually.

He described the accommodation problem facing the students as very acute and said this has compelled those who are unable to be accommodated by the university to accept rooms elsewhere at exorbitant charges.

Mr Owusu-Boateng also appealed to the government to ensure prompt payment of its 30 per cent rebate on fees for second cycle and tertiary institutions.

He said the delay in payment of the money to these institutions is affecting academic work and also making the running of the institutions very difficult.

When contacted, Rev Prof Emmanuel Adow Obeng, the Vice-Chancellor, told the GNA that the UCC last month, received government’s rebate for last year and is yet to receive this year’s.

He said students are paying fees meant for SRC development activities, dues for the SRC and the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) membership and medical expenses and that only a small portion goes to the University.
